幾番刻骨傷痛 磨出皇家韌性

皇家隊在世界大賽拿下主場2連勝，但教練團和球員卻沒有太多喜悅，因為他們親如兄弟的戰友、首戰先發投手沃奎茲仍沉浸在父親驟逝的哀痛當中。
27日賽前，沃奎茲遠在多明尼加的父親丹尼爾因心臟問題過世，母親和妻子拜託球團隱瞞，沃奎茲完成優質先發退場後才驚聞噩耗。當隊友28日正為第二戰拚搏，沃奎茲返鄉哀傷送別慈父。
在喪禮會場，沃奎茲神情哀戚，雙眼滿是淚水，他抱著母親和妹妹在父親靈柩旁痛哭。沃奎茲10歲那年，老丹送給兒子第一只手套，開啟了他追隨多國國民偶像佩卓馬丁尼茲的棒球人生。浮沉多年後，32歲的沃奎茲終於等到進軍世界大賽的機緣，但引領他踏入棒球天地的老爸驟逝，令他哀痛茫然。
沃奎茲說，他會在紐約與球隊會合。他是表定第5戰先發，但他說不知自己歸隊後能否調適心情，重拾手套出賽。而沃奎茲沒忘了隊友給予的溫暖。他謝謝隊友的關心，也感激致電安慰的奎托和范圖拉兩位同國隊友。昨役勝投奎托也在賽後記者會感性說，「要把這場勝利獻給沃爸和沃奎茲的家人。」沃奎茲是皇家隊近3個月來，第三位痛失父母的球員。在世界大賽贏球的狂喜，完全被「家人」喪父的感傷沖淡。
這個更衣室關係緊密，主力球員從小聯盟起就一塊打拚，共同經歷成長的挫折，休兵期間也幾乎膩在一起。在遭遇史無前例的連續失親之痛後，原本就親如手足的皇家隊反而更親密團結，展現包容，而這種化學效應，正是這支球隊堅強韌性和無比難纏的源頭。
世界大賽前，大都會隊強棒丹尼爾墨菲說，他對皇家的印象是「不屈不撓」；《今日美國報》專欄作家南汀葛爾寫道，「皇家隊正是那種你甩不掉的蟑螂，大都會隊就是打不死他們。」
2場世界大賽，2場逆轉勝；前兩輪季後賽，4場逆轉勝。皇家隊在比賽後段爆發的特質，對陷入零勝兩敗劣勢的大都會隊來說，已無再犯錯的本錢。
